The Information-Telegraph Agency of Russia (ITAR-TASS), formerly the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS), is one of the five largest news agencies in the world. ITAR-TASS retains its status as the official state central information agency, but access to information and technology has opened up since the democratic reforms of the early 1990s. There are 74 bureaus and stations in Russia and the other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, and 62 bureaus in 59 foreign countries.
