De Groene Amsterdammer is het oudste weekblad in Nederland. Het is in 1877 opgericht als weekblad voor handel, industrie en kunst. Met uitzondering van de vijf bezettingsjaren tussen 1940 en 1945 toen het zijn verschijning staakte, heeft weekblad al die jaren zijn financiële onafhankelijkheid weten te behouden. De Groene Amsterdammer is nu het laatste weekblad dat geen onderdeel is van een groter uitgeversconcern. Ook het non-conformistische karakter heeft meer dan een eeuw stand gehouden.Als opinieblad vaart De Groene Amsterdammer momenteel een sociaal liberale koers op basis van vertrouwen in het rechtstatelijke karakter van de parlementaire democratie in Nederland.In tegenstelling tot de andere weekbladen, concentreert De Groene Amsterdammer zich op analyse en meningsvorming.De Groene Amsterdammer richt zich op maatschappelijk en cultureel betrokken burgers.De Groene Amsterdammer heeft vooral lezers onder de intelligentsia in kringen van academici en hooggeschoolden, professionele ambachtslieden, media en journalistiek, beleidsmakers op politiek niveau, medewerkers in onderwijs en gezondheidszorg alsmede cultuurdragers in de kunsten.

De Groene Amsterdammer is the oldest weekly paper in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1877 as a weekly for trade, industry and arts. Apart from the five years under German occupation between 1940 and 1945 when the weekly ceased to exist, the weekly all those years has maintained its financial independence. De Groene Amsterdammer is nowadays the last weekly that is not part of a bigger publishing house.
