The Midland/Penetanguishene Free Press was founded in 1879, coinciding with the arrival of the Canadian National Railroad and the boom in lumber and shipping industries. The Free Press covers a year-round population area of almost 50,000 including Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay Townships, and surrounding areas. The Free Press, which produces two paid-circulation issues and a free extended market publication each week, reaches more than 22,000 homes.
